About the Artist
G. Russell Case (b. 1966)
Born in Brigham City, Utah, Russell Case was encouraged by his father, Garry Case, who was an illustrator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. As a young artist, Case interpreted his surroundings with watercolor. This was the foundation for the fluid style found in his later oils. His style continued to evolve during his college years, where Case studied. After graduating from Utah State University in 1990, Case decided to dedicate himself to painting full-time. Oils became his medium of choice after attending a painting program in Arizona. During this program, he was also introduced to American painter Robert Henri who became very influential to Case’s work.
As a painter, G. Russell Case has a unique approach to his work. His interpretations of the American southwestern landscape reflect his vision through observation of nature, color and light. He explains about his style and process in an article by Virginia Campbell for Southwest Art, “How you go about simplifying is one of the hardest things about painting,” he acknowledges. “It’s like a novel. You have your main character, and then your supporting characters, and after that the more stuff you put in, the more distracting it gets.” In painting, each brush stroke or compositional element signifies a host of conscious and unconscious decisions, and each precludes a host of other possibilities. Drawing just enough of the right detail from the landscape is fraught with enough opportunities to wreck a whole day’s work. “What I like is when I come upon a scene so simple that I actually have to add interest back in,” he laughs. “The point of simplicity is to let the idea come through the landscape.”
